Nothing wasted: what happens to the brine, the spills and the water

Making salt with 100% geothermal energy means our carbon footprint in making the salt is zero. But we also try to make sure nothing else goes to waste.

The brine

When the flakes are lifted out, a mineral-rich brine is left in the pans. Instead of pouring it away, it becomes the base for a skincare line.

The salt on the floor

A salt house is never perfectly tidy. Salt that spills on the floor goes to the farmers next door, for their sheep.

The water

Our filtration produces fresh water, and we reuse it in the facility.

The journey

Our US shipments sail the most direct route, from Iceland to Portland, Maine. It costs us more, but it is the lower-emission path.

The jar

Keep your glass jar and refill it from our pouch when it runs low. Pure flake salt keeps indefinitely, so a jar never goes off. It only runs out.
