Smoked, black, herb or seaweed? A guide to flavored sea salts
A flavored salt is a shortcut: one pinch adds salt and a second note at the same time. Each of ours starts with the same flaky sea salt, hand-harvested from Arctic seawater with geothermal energy, and adds one ingredient rooted in Icelandic tradition or foraged in Iceland.
Birch Smoked Salt
Our flakes smoked over Icelandic birch wood for more than 48 hours, in the spirit of old Icelandic tradition. Woodsy, rounded and a little sweet. Use it on eggs, potatoes, roast vegetables, burgers and anything from the grill, or on the rim of a smoky margarita.
Lava Salt
Flake salt blended with activated charcoal. The charcoal does not add a flavor of its own; it rounds the edges, giving a smooth, mellow salt, and the black color looks striking on butter, white fish, fruit and soups.
Arctic Thyme Salt
Infused with wild Arctic thyme, hand-picked in the Westfjords. It is sweeter than garden thyme, floral and herbal. Made for lamb, cured salmon or trout, poultry and roast potatoes.
Seaweed Salt
A blend of two Icelandic seaweeds, dulse and sugar kelp. Saline, earthy and full of umami. Use it on cod and other white fish, in soups and broths, on popcorn and in brines and ferments.
Licorice Salt
Flake salt with licorice root, part of the Nordic love of sweet and salty. Toasty, then tangy. Try it on dark chocolate, caramel, duck, pork and baked goods.
How long do flavored salts keep?
Pure flake salt keeps indefinitely. Our flavored salts hold their best flavor for about five years. Keep the lid on and store them somewhere dry.
